Work-Study Student Charts Path to Medicine Through Compassionate Care Post date January 20, 2025 Jocelyn Ramirez, a senior at Cristo Rey Dallas College Prep, dreams of becoming an anesthesiologist. As a participant in the Cristo Rey work-study program, she’s gaining invaluable experience working with Forefront Living (FL), where her passion for medicine and her dedication to helping others shine through. Her journey recently brought her to attend an Interdisciplinary Group (IDG) meeting at Faith Presbyterian Hospice (FPH). These meetings, which bring together an array of professionals—including doctors, nurses, social workers, chaplains and other caregivers—focus on the holistic care of patients, addressing every aspect of their well-being and journey. For Jocelyn, the experience was eyeopening. “I was amazed at how every team member had such a unique role in supporting the patient,” Jocelyn shared. “It made me realize how interconnected healthcare really is and how every small detail contributes to making a big difference in someone’s life.” Jocelyn’s role as a work-study student in the Public Relations and Communications department at FL provides her with a glimpse into the complexities of healthcare and the power of teamwork. Balancing her work-study responsibilities with her academic pursuits, she’s learning to approach challenges with compassion and a commitment to excellence. Her visit to the IDG meeting also reinforced her aspirations to specialize in anesthesiology. “Seeing the team discuss pain management and comfort care for patients reminded me why I want to be an anesthesiologist—to ensure people feel supported and at ease during critical moments,” she said. Cristo Rey Dallas’s unique program has enabled Jocelyn to immerse herself in professional environments while preparing for college and her eventual medical career. Her time at FL has not only strengthened her resolve to pursue medicine but also deepened her understanding of the human side of healthcare. “Jocelyn brings so much enthusiasm and heart to everything she does,” said Amee McGough, FL Public Relations Laison who works closely with her. “She’s a wonderful example of how the next generation can bring fresh perspectives and a genuine desire to make a difference.” As Jocelyn looks ahead to graduation, she carries with her the lessons learned at FL and FPH—lessons about teamwork, compassion and the importance of holistic care. These experiences are not just shaping her career path but also the kind of physician she hopes to become: one who treats patients with skill, empathy and unwavering dedication. by Wendy Van Bemmel ← Older Posts
